Earlier this year, we wrote about the introduction of the CBAM levy – the new European CO₂ regulation that will take effect in 2026. We can now share an important update: Metalwire has been officially approved as a CBAM declarant by the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa). This means we meet all European requirements for registering and reporting CO₂ emissions related to the import of steel and aluminium products.
Because we are now officially recognised as a CBAM declarant, nothing changes in terms of our delivery reliability. We can continue to import materials from outside Europe in full compliance with the new regulations. Companies without CBAM approval will no longer be allowed to import steel or aluminium products from non-EU countries as of 2026. In practice, this means that shipments may be held at the border or in port. For our customers, that concern does not exist.
CBAM in brief – a quick recap
CBAM, short for Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, is the new European CO₂ levy on imported products with a high carbon footprint, such as steel and aluminium.
The goal: to create a level playing field between European producers – who already pay for their emissions – and suppliers from outside the EU.
Since late 2023, importers have been required to report the CO₂ emissions linked to their imported goods. From 2026 onwards, the levy will be applied financially. Only companies with official CBAM authorisation will be allowed to import steel and aluminium products from outside the European Union.
What does this authorisation mean for Metalwire?
This authorisation confirms that Metalwire complies with all European requirements for importing steel and aluminium products from outside the EU.
As an officially recognised CBAM declarant, we can continue to import these materials after the introduction of the new system – something that will no longer be permitted without approval.
To achieve this, we have carefully mapped our international suppliers and gained clear insight into the CO₂ emissions related to their production. These data are reported to the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa) in line with European guidelines.
For our customers, this means we can continue sourcing from our trusted manufacturers while maintaining the same quality, continuity and transparency.
What will change for our customers?
The reliability of our deliveries remains exactly as you are used to.
However, the introduction of CBAM will bring some changes – particularly in the cost price of materials.
From 2026 onwards, importers of steel and aluminium will be required to purchase CBAM certificates. The value of these certificates is linked to the European CO₂ price. The associated costs will be passed along throughout the supply chain – from manufacturers to importers, and ultimately to the end customer.
For our customers, this means that prices for steel and aluminium products will gradually change during 2026.
We will communicate these adjustments clearly and in good time, so you know what to expect and can plan accordingly.
CBAM introduces new rules for cost structure and reporting, but not for delivery reliability. Metalwire ensures that these changes are transparent and manageable – without unpleasant surprises.
What does this mean for the wire industry?
The wire industry depends heavily on steel and aluminium – the very materials affected by CBAM. As a result, the new regulation impacts nearly every part of the chain: from producers to processors and end users.
For European manufacturers, CBAM creates a fairer competitive landscape. Companies importing without approval, however, will no longer be able to deliver after 2026, which could affect availability and prices across the market.
Metalwire is well-prepared for this change. Our CBAM authorisation allows us to maintain access to suppliers outside Europe while complying fully with European legislation. This enables us to continue supplying customers in sectors such as recycling, construction, retail and industry – reliably, transparently and in full compliance with the rules.
The next step towards 2026
Being recognised as a CBAM declarant is an important milestone for Metalwire – and, frankly, a relief. We can continue our international import flows while meeting all European requirements. But the real work begins now.
Over the coming months, we will further strengthen our reporting and control systems to ensure that all required CO₂ data from our suppliers are submitted on time. We will also stay in close contact with our partners and customers to clearly communicate how CBAM affects pricing and material availability.
Our goal is not only to comply with regulations, but to provide clarity. Customers should always know what is changing, what it means, and how we ensure reliable deliveries. CBAM changes the rules on reporting and purchasing – but not our promise: consistent quality, clear communication and dependable supply.
